A worked example

Solve for x and y: x + y = 14 and x − y = 4. x = 9, y = 5

  1. Add the two equations so the y terms cancel: 2x = 14 + 4 = 18
  2. x = 18 ÷ 2 = 9
  3. Put x back into x + y = 14: y = 14 − 9 = 5
  4. So x = 9, y = 5
